A Traditional Chinese Dessert Symbolizing Reunion and Happiness
The History of Tangyuan
Tangyuan originated in the Song Dynasty in Mingzhou (now Ningbo,
Zhejiang). Locals made fillings primarily from black sesame and white sugar,
wrapped in gluten-free glutinous rice flour dough and boiled. Because the balls
floated in water, they were originally called "Floating Yuanzi."
Tangyuan is an essential food for the Lantern Festival and Winter Solstice, sym-
bolizing unity and the hope for a happy life.
